The males are usually larger than females. Domestic hogs are about the same size; however, feral hogs have longer legs, snouts and they have a larger head in proportion to the body. Their body is covered with long, wire-like hair, a longer straighter tail, and a "hump" on the neck giving the hog a razorback appearance. Feral hogs have much more muscle mass than domestic hogs. The young are born a reddish color with black stripes. As they mature, the coat color becomes mostly dark brown or black. They have poor eyesight but make up for that with both amazing senses of hearing and smell. Hogs have four continuously growing tusks (two on top, two on bottom) and their contact causes a continuous sharpening of the lower tusks. A word to all, STAY AWAY!! Their tusks are razor sharp and they know how to use them. Feral hogs are unpredictable and can turn and charge for no reason and very quickly. A few years back I was charged by a large male from about 50 yards. I was standing right next to my truck, and just barely made it inside before the hog was on me.
