Awww Rat's (yuck!)
ratinkitchen.jpg

Rats are intelligent robust creatures that carry disease and can be very tricky to eradicate. Rat's typically will not hit traps, as traps have a human scent on them and they see us as big predators. Ever had rats and caught only a few ? With rats there are never just a few unless you catch them in the very beginning. It is estimated that there is 5 times as many rats as humans on planet earth. Rats have between 3 to 12 litters per year. Each litter contains between 8 to 14 with a gestation period of about 3 weeks. The infants will be ready to mate within 10 to 12 weeks. So, a pair of roof rats can have as many as 2000 descendants within 1 year. Rarely is the infestation caught early because rats run on your attic insulation. By the time you hear them in the attic or walls, the insulation is flat from feces and urine as well as the insulation flattened out because of the rats running the same trails. By this time, you have had them for a year or more. Rats are intelligent and can be very difficult to remove using DIY methods.

Rat's don't have control over their bodily functions, so they just drop presents and dribble as they walk around. Rats leave around 40 droppings per day, These droppings are dark brown in a tapered, spindle shape, between 1/2 to 3/4 inch long. Rat incisor teeth continually grow so they have to gnaw. If they don't "whittle" there teeth down they will go through their lips. Evidence of this can frequently be found by way of wiring being chewed through in attics.

Rats are most active at night so you may hear signs of movement or scratching in walls and ceilings. Rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a nickle. Rub marks are dark shadows left by the oil on rat fur which can often be found around holes or along routes often used by rats (rat runs).

Rat's nest next to a food supply, If you have bird feeders, you have rat's, guaranteed! They come out at night to hit the feeders as well as get the seed from the ground. Call Complete wildlife solutions for a free whole home assessment and give your self peace of mind. Once they find a food supply they enter attics or live under your home. They enter attics because an attic is hotter than the surrounding area, so it has a positive pressure. Hot air is constantly leaving your attic and animals smell this. Looking for a warm and cozy home, they move in and make themselves at home. Once the  food supply is established your attic becomes a maternal colony. The only way to rid yourself of rats is to remove the food source. If you love your bird feeder and plan to keep it, you must have your home sealed up so the rats cannot establish a colony next to the food supply. A preventive seal up is a low cost must! Call Complete Wildlife Solutions for a FREE whole home assessment of the situation.

How To Identify a Rat infestation In your yard. When looking for signs of rats in your yard, garden, and around buildings, look for burrows. These will have an opening of between 2 to 4 inches wide and can be found anywhere on your property. Look around trees, bushes, in overgrown areas, areas around decking, sheds, or down the side of building walls.

Don't let your family live in a toxic environment!

When rats get into your attic it is not long before they tear into your A/C air ducts. These ducts provide the perfect nesting material. Once rats get into these pipes they leave A LOT of feces and urine as they walk. As the cool dry A.C air blows across the feces it dries it out and turns it into microscopic particles that your family is breathing. Disease is transmitted, respiratory problems start in the house, and sometimes dogs can become very sick.

Rats do not have to bite in order to cause illness; mere exposure to rat waste is the cause of many debilitating diseases. Rat urine, for example, is one of the leading causes of leptospirosis, a condition that can cause severe kidney and liver damage among humans.

Other diseases that are specifically carried by rats include, but are not limited to:

  • Salmonellosis – a disease that can cause abdominal cramps, diarrhea, intense vomiting and fever. Symptoms can begin as soon as 12 hours after exposure.

  • Weil’s disease – a severe form of leptospirosis, caused by the same bacteria. If leptospirosis reaches this stage, you will likely have to be hospitalized. Severe reactions may occur in the lungs, the heart, and the brain, if the bacteria reaches those organs.

  • Rat bite fever – a disease which can be passed to humans from rat urine or mucus. It is also known as epidemic arthritic erythema, streptobacillosis, streptobacillary fever, sodoku, and spirillary fever. Symptoms may include chills, fever and intense vomiting.

  • The plague – which can be spread through airborne contact in extremely unsanitary areas. The bubonic plague, one of the world’s longest-lasting rodent-borne illnesses, is only one manifestation of this disease.

  • Hantavirus – a disease serious enough to require a report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) if contracted. If it progresses to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, it can be fatal.
